Three-headed space dragons make damn good records! Said behemoth, Geedorah, has a mission: to give us his monsters-eye insight into the way humans see and treat each other. Okay, so Geedorah is actually rapper/producer MF Doom, who in a past life was (ready for another alter-ego?) Zev Love X of KMD. This is a guy who has already attained ‘Quirk Don’ status, placing him shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow non-conformists Kool Keith and Madlib. And there’s no abating with Leader, which Doom, to his immense credit, produced himself. So I guess we can let him off for only rapping on two of the tracks, especially as he’s recruited a worthy crew of space cadet lyricists including Biolante aka Kurious. The first four tracks - Fazers, Fastlane, Krazy World (featuring Gigan), and Monster Zero all make use of dramatic samples that lend tenable pathos (not to mention phatness) to the proceedings. Other tracks get experimental with the beats, at times tracks changing tempo mid-track (as is the case with No Snakes Alive). Throughout, dirty funkiness – nay illness – is wonderfully prevalent. |
