This album is the definitive statement of the Tropicalia movement in Brazil. The album's collaborators - Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, Nara Leao, Gal Costa and Os Mutantes - mixed psychedelic rock with boleros, sambas, bossa nova and jazz into a carnival-esque parade which first announced the new global sound of Brazilian music.
What is stunning is that this anarchic and groundbreaking release was recorded at the height of the Brazilian military dictatorship, during an era where censorship, repression and the threat of violence was a constant in all (musical and) daily life inside the country.
