First Word Records started in 2004 as a collaboration between Leeds promoter Aly Gillani (DJ Gilla) and Sheffield DJ Andy H. The duo felt that the fertile music scene in their corner of the UK wasn't getting the exposure it deserved and thus FW was born. Originally releasing music from their friends and peers (kidkanevil, Homecut, The Haggis Horns) the label has expanded over the years to include artists from across the globe including Souleance (France), Yosi Horikawa (Japan), Tall Black Guy (US), Ross McHenry (Australia) and Comfort Fit (Germany). Now based in London the label has now notched up over 100 releases and built a worldwide following.
To celebrate their first decade the label have put together some 10" vinyl releases (what else!) with a selection of some of the best releases of the last 10 years. The first, subtitled 'Second Chance' features 4 tracks that are no longer available on vinyl. The Haggis Horns unmistakable 'Traveller Part Two' is given a new mix for 2014 - the original 12" release of this one changes hands for over £50 a time! There's also Souleance's 'One Step Re-Edit' from their debut EP 'Le Monde', Tall Black Guy's 'The Dark Streets' from '8 Miles To Moenart' album and Lotek's 'Rebel Hifi' from 2010's 'International Rudeboy'. All 4 tracks are guaranteed dance floor destroyers - this is one of those records that discerning DJs won't want to leave home without!
