It's not like Kanye came from nowhere with his debut LP, but it's only 2005, and he's not only avoiding a sophomore slump with "Late Registration," he's on the cover of Time Magazine on its release date! That, my friend, is a hip hop first. Hype aside, this album does not keep its promises, led by the singles "Diamonds are Forever (f/Jay-Z)" and "Gold Digger," it works darn good, but soon after you start to think that some tracks are way too cheesy and fordable. Where's the master of choppin' up mushy soul tracks and re-programming them into smashers? (like Diamonds or Common's Chi-City..) Just to easy how uninspired he sampled Gil Scott-Heron's "Home is where the hatred is" and just too kitschy how the whole arrangement tends to get ahead of itself. Mean, it's all good, it works as one big HipHop-Pop album, i just wished there was more ruffness to it. But Kanye "High Achiever" West is definitely running for the number one black pop icon par exellence - and i think he's on the right tracks.... |
