The customary electronic drum-machine beats are replaced by slightly echo-y live drumming, which gives the rhythm section of the tracks a distant feel. Songs are simple in structure - a consistent beat-break backed by a bass or keyboard pattern, and although the sound is different to Sixtoo's non-instrumental work, his trademark robotic repetition is the defining factor of this record - Noise Complaint will have you positively hypnotized. All instruments are played by Sixtoo, except keys, by Alias - and the standard of all instruments is very high, proving yet again Anticon members' multi-talented nature.
The sound here is not revolutionary - in fact it is reminiscent to the mellow but dark style of DJ Shadow. What Secrets... lacks in originality however, it makes up for in shear quality of execution - it sounds so GOOD! The creepy organs on Noise Complaint, the bongos and sitars of the title track, and the touch of old-skool breaks on the final, untitled song, its all fantastic. |
