“Trill” has an old school Hip-Hop vibe reminiscent of some Prince Paul/De La classic, but is updated with the new school through Co$$’s west coast rhyme scheme. Staying on topic through the song, Co$$ develops different stories dedicated to the premise of keeping it “trill.” The beat, produced by Chikaramanga, contains many layers, from piano riffs that come in and little guitar “wahs” that drop out throughout the track. These 7-inch series have been a great way to not only remain inspired through the messages portrayed by emcees, but to also show how Chikaramanga can flip what seems to be an unordinary sample.
Co$$ a.k.a. Cashus King is a Los Angeles emcee that has been on the come up most commonly with Blu, which you might have heard his name dropped in some of Blu’s songs. His latest 12 inch “Khakis and Taylors,” has received a lot of praise in the L.A. beat scene and his song “No Allah,” brought up a lot of talk among folks in the Hip Hop community. Co$$ has also been featured on Fashawn’s “Sunny CA” track and U-N-I’s “Herb.”
Chikaramanga, of Giant Panda, has been pushing his music to the next step. After having album releases and worldwide tours with Giant Panda, he has currently been releasing 45’s which contain emcees such as Big Tone, Droop Capone, and now Co$$, rapping over his beats. Since 1996, Chikara has been chopping samples and tracking out drums. Even in today’s heavily computerized scene, he sticks with his SP-12, MPC60, and S3000. With all the beats that he is able to produce while running the day to day operations for an independent label, one can only wonder how his typical day goes. |
