Black Market Militia is a reconfiguration of the Wu-Tang extended family, pairing Sunz of Man members Killah Priest and Hell Razah, with Royal Fam’s Timbo King and Tragedy Khadafi. This super-group’s politically charged debut enlists the verbal weaponry of fellow revolutionaries The Last Poets and Dead Prez. Killah Priest is the most tightly affiliated with the inner-Wu circle, and made a name for himself with his 1998 solo debut Heavy Mental. Tragedy Khadafi is by far the most deeply rooted in hip-hop history and was previously part of the legendary Juice Crew alongside legendary rappers Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, and Kool G Rap. With his 1990 Marley Marl produced solo debut Intelligent Hoodlum, Khadafi, laid the groundwork for the Queens-bridge rhyme renaissance which has continued to flourish into 2005 with Nas, Mobb Deep, and Capone & Noreaga. Marked by dark, gritty, east-coast beats along with the trademark hardcore rhyme delivery common among all factions of the Wu, the Militia digs deeper than most into the socioeconomic factors plaguing poverty-stricken blacks growing up in the ghetto. Black Market Militia’s aggressive attack on America’s deeply divided economic, spiritual, and political landscape makes this self-titled debut a must-have for anyone seeking hardcore yet socially conscious hip-hop.
