Romance and passion are words seldom used in conjunction with Hip Hop music. But listening to Dillas new oeuvre, I can imagine doing that ol’ parking game with the lady of my choice. Somewhere near the sea, watching the sun set and flipping through the radio dial. And finally getting stuck on that WDILLA channel who plays nothing but sweet 70’s soul. But something seems kinda strange, the sob-stuff, often assosciated with soul music, abruptly gets a harder edge. The corniness changes into a horney little devil and your mind starts playing tricks on you. Thinking about nasty little things, Reverend Al Green never would do to his beloved one. Bits and pieces of that, ‘til now, background music start to loop in your head and your torn between the good, the bad and the ugly. Should I marry her or simply do the do? This isn’t music, it’s a trip into your innerself, descovering the beauty and the abyss at the same time, not knowing which path to follow. The righteous or the condemnable one? Damn! And…ahm, did I mention that “Donuts” is just plain dope? This might be the only Hip Hop record I’ll buy this year and I probably won’t miss the ones to follow.
