Pax & Pry sprang into being from the Utrecht-based, live hip-hop band Illicit. The band's tour-intensive approach has led to over 400 live shows in the last five years, sending its members in search of side projects to challenge and redefine their styles. Says Pax, "Pry and I started spacing out in the off-hours striving to refine our individual sounds. The newfound freedom we discovered in collaborating gives us an escape from the confines of our band."
This refined sound builds off the work of Slum Village, Common, and Blackalicious, substituting their neo-soul agendas with an inventive assault of hardcore drums. "We don't call ourselves revolutionary," Pax adds, "but we live to develop something that is."
Pax (a.k.a. Paradox) is a next-chapter rapper whose deep, commanding voice leaves no room for doubt. Go ahead, just try to find a clue that English is his second language. Pry (ditto, Principle) is a face-crushing guitarist and newfound beat creator with an insatiable appetite for crate-digging.
October 2007 marks the release of Pax & Pry's debut album A Day at the Office, a record that catapults them into the ranks of the Dutch hip-hop elite. The masterwork comes after three years of collaboration and imagination. Featuring guest appearances by DMC Champion Kypski of C-Mon & Kypski; Gumshoe from The Proov; and DJ Sjam of Nobody Beats the Drum, the record enjoys an ultra-selective release in the form of a limited-edition vinyl pressing of 300 hand-numbered units. |
