Here we have some of the finest moment of 70’s funk from Detroit label Westbound Guitarist Melvin Sparks is a living legend, acclaimed for his jazz/soul/funk chops, hearkening back to the days when he performed with sax titan Lou Donaldson and a litany of other jazz notables, “Get Ya Some” is a very cool 70’s brass and conga groove highlighted by Melvins superb jazz guitar playing. Check the break also ! Then we got Donald Austin’s “Rainy Day Fun” with its thunder and rain intro and captivating guitar licks. BREAK ALERT ! Parliament / Funkadelic member Fuzzy Haskins “Fuzz and Da Boog” –As used by 45 King on “The Lost Breakbeats LP” (Tuff City) - This is a superb uptempo break with a great groove that makes a wicked loop for the dancers ! Highlights On Side B include Caesar Frazier who delivers a baadass Hammond solo over some serious brass, bass and drums, plus Boots “Unknown Song” from 1973 – more fat drums here (especially the snares!) and a great bassline lick at the beginning for sample heads – in fact this track is some heavy hip hop sample groove just waiting to be used the groove lifts up after a minute and the whole vibe picks up. Finally The Counts “Rhythm Changes” is one of two vocal tracks on the album, another headnodding 70’s groove that hits the right spots |
