Second release in the Beat & Discovery series, ” Beat’em All ” is the first album by producer Creestal. A dozen years ago Creestal was only 15 when he randomly end up in a beatmaking workshop upon request by a social worker of his block who put his name on the list. For the young DJ it the the opportunity to learn how to do his own music and the learn from a pro, since the lessons were given by IAM’s producer, Imhotep. That’s when he started creating beats for his friends of Karkan. A fan of soul, jazz and funk he has been collecting loops for ten years and he has more than enough to feed his MPC. On his first album he demonstrates that he is a serious composer. Chopping many vocal samples and adding some scratches, the 27 tracks of the album are dense and they form a real piece of work, definitely deeper than a beat-tape. The production on ” Beat’Em All ” show a gifted ear for catchy hooks and an ability to chop soul, jazz and latin loop with a hip-hop touch. With his musical ear and his knack for live sounding drums Creestal reminds us of Dj Spinna, Pete Rock as well as Madlib.
