Label: Epitome of Fresh
Release Year: 2006

UPR 1 was originally designed around Vestax 's PDX 2000 turntable back in 2000. It was the first turntable to introduce a pitch range of 60+/- . It changed the way scratchers scratched, and producers produced. UPR 1 was soon released thereafter, which helped in the process of revolutionaizing the way turntables were played.

The second-to-last release in the UPR series comes full circle to introduce the first record designed to be used with Vestax's newest turntable, The Controller One. The Controller One was designed by Ricci Rucker and DJ D-Styles. The Controller One turntable is like a Moog synthesizer that can be scratched, changed to different scales, and pitch-controlled by the hand or foot. Since the sound source is vinyl, the sounds are completely interchangable. Even classical music can be written and played on this turntable. This is a monumental moment that probably won't be truely understood until years from now.

The sounds on this record are arranged as locked grooves (sounds that play endlessly). Since the turntable’s powerful motor can change any tone to play like any note on any other instrument, the idea is now bending tones, and using the crossfader and other tricks to create all types of melodies; tonal, staccato, basslines, etc.. What is needed now are endless tones. With this record you can simply play the tone, and spend time on tweaking the sounds with filters and effects, and controlling the pitch with the buttons, and creating an enviornment before you even touch the record itself. Ricci usually runs his records through guitar amps, and various effects to shape the sounds to something else. He is known to use vocoders and voice modules, like the talk box (roger and zapp) while scratching at the same time.

UPR4 has some of the nicest sounding vintage analog tones and vintage drum kits ever recorded to audio for this purpose. Plenty of attention was spent on the actual textures of the sounds. The tones are so nice, playing them on loop continuously as they are, can set a vibe alone. These tones are also completely shapable, not colored with reverb. To see this record used by Ricci himself, truely sets the bar on the validity of these records. Fact sheet. -More than 80 10 tonal, arppegio, vintage synth locked grooves on one side. More than 15 vintage drum kits and electro beats in all. Each side features custom recorded vintage drum machine locked grooves, the kind Sly Stone would use.

This record can be used with traditional turntables and sample producers as well. This style of records will continue as an entirely new series.
