A decade in the making, The Lost Union City Sessions is about to shake up the underground and beyond. This new collaboration between longtime studio mastermind Rob Grimmer and fearless MC/producer Oddateee dives into raw, genre-bending territory—mixing surf rock vibes, dusty hip-hop beats, and off-kilter blues licks into one intoxicating brew.
Rob Grimmer grew up marinated in sound. Pops was a music teacher and a studio owner, so the crib was always teeming with creative energy and late-night jams. By his teens, Rob had already transformed an old chicken coop into a makeshift recording spot—foreshadowing the DIY ethos that would guide his career. After spending over 14 years grinding at a record store, running an in-house label, and founding a music publishing company, Rob stepped back to focus on fatherhood, eventually relocating to Lucerne, Switzerland. Now, at 49, he’s reigniting his passion and linking back up with some of the cats who shaped his early career.
Back in the day, Rob made waves as part of TALEN, dropping three EPs on Mouthwatering Records between 2009 and 2010. Those releases featured heavy-hitters like Lady Saw, Sizzla, Cutty Ranks, and Oddateee—blurring the lines between Future Dancehall, Post-Step, and everything in between. In 2012, Rob laid down the seeds for The Lost Union City Sessions in Union City, New Jersey—retreating from the routine of everyday life to dive deep into his craft alongside Lone from the Mudslingaz Crew. These recordings sat on ice for a full decade before Rob dusted them off and gave them fresh life.
Fast-forward to 2023, and Rob’s reconnected with his longtime homie Oddateee—renowned for collabs with High-Tone, Le Peuple de l’Herbe, dälek, Markus Kienzl, and TALEN. Oddateee’s fearless approach continues here, brewing a sound that’s as gritty as it is cinematic. Think Tarantino flicks meet gritty basement show—an underground vibe that’s impossible to ignore.
These new tracks capture a rebellious spirit that’s not afraid to break from the predictable. Surf rock, hip- hop, blues—it’s all mashed up and dialed in to channel the energy of a wild road trip with your closest crew. The guitars glide like waves at Rockaway Beach, the beats roll like a night in a crammed NYC club, and the overall flavor reminds you that this is what happens when honest expression meets unbridled creativity. |
