1987's Subliminal is one of the more eccentric albums in the bulging discography of Japanese saxophonist turned electronics wizard Yasuaki Shimizu. It was recorded in Paris and was an apparently an attempt by the composer-producer to "capture the spirit of everyday encounters". As this essential reissue proves, the album has lost none of its quirky charms over the last three decades. There are dashes of off-kilter soundtrack jazz, pitched-down synth-pop chuggers, inspired fusions of traditional French music and rubbery electrofunk, far-sighted global fusions that defy easy categorization, and moments that some may consider "Balearic". This reissue also includes two tasty new edits of album highlights from Japanism label boss Chee Shimizu, both of which expertly extend the original versions for added out-of-this-world pleasure. |
