Written & Produced by Luther Davis, Jr.
Engineered Arnold Wayne Morrison
Recorded at Arnold Wayne Morrison's Living Room
Originally released in 1979 on Life Time Records 11R-103, Bakersfield, California.
Luther Davis's modern soul/disco masterpieces "You Can Be A Star" and "To Be Free" set off the series of disco reissues and re-edits on Soul-Cal Records, founded in 2003. Bakersfield, California's Davis was the ideal artist to set off the series. The solitary release on his self-financed Lifetime label has been an in-demand UK club spin since its release - in not only the northern soul scene, but modern soul and deep funk scenes as well. Its extreme rarity is a pity - the blissful mix of soulful vocals, strong four-on-the-floor rhythms, intricate horn arrangements and gritty, low-fi production transcend the record's early '80s release. It is resolutely contemporary - and in its newly remastered loud form, it's ready to light up dance floors the world over. |
