Funckarma and Shadow Huntaz rekindle their successful relationship for a third album of overweight dystopian hip-hop electronics. 'Dark Matter' feels no need to f*ck with their precise formula, advancing further into that same vortex of conscious lyrics applied to acid abstracted and tensely paranoid beats from the brothers Funcken. The noirish strings of 'Worship Devilz' remind us of Kareem's immense 'Neoclassical' album and perfectly suit the biblical content of the lyrics, while on the title track Funckarma provide sprung electronic rhythms with an inimitable swing to counter the crew's angular flow. For many, the real allure of this project is when they find those real dark sounds like on 'Implant', sounding like RZA plugged into a morbid matrix of synthesizers, or on 'Shout Louder' coming across like Anti Pop Consortium for the deep late night listening sessions. |
