Great bands like “Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings", “Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators” or “The New Mastersounds” putted before, “The Sweet Vandals” picked up the plot and followed it through and present now an album which demonstrates in a impressive manner, that Funk & Soul isn’t dead or pass at all, its alive folks, and how it is! With passion and love to the detail, using vintage microphones and a fat old tapemachine, those five madrileéos produced a monster of a Funk album! Tracks like “Do It Right” or “Beautiful” show, where the point is according to “The Sweet Vandals": Timeless Funk & Soul far away from experiments which would guide into the nowhere of jazz music anyway, Passion and Love! Drums, inspired by Bernard Purdie (James Brown Drummer), played by Javier Gomez meet the raw and soulful voice of Mayka Edjo und generate together with the Guitar of José Angel Herranz, the Bass of Santi Martin and the Hammong Organ of Carlos Coup such an energy, that you, no matter if you’re at home, in your favorite club or even at a concert of the Vandals, just have to let one’s hair down and abandon yourself to tight, straight, uncompromising and syncopated funk! Thats the sound of “The Sweet Vandals"! Perhaps it’s because of all this, that their first 7″ “I Got You, Man!” (Funkorama Records) is already a club anthem even if it’s been released no more than five months ago! Well, in any case, “The Sweet Vandals” are, because of the perfect and unique voice and the vibe of that incredible band, already one of Europe’s best Deep Funk Bands and secured a place in the vinylbags of scenes top DJs like Keb Darge, DJ Shadow, Kenny Dope or DJ Spinna as well as in the hearts of music lovers like Paul Weller, Dave Ball (Soft Cell) or Neneh Cherie. With this album, the Sweet Vandals managed it to bring the Funk of the 60s and 70s into the year 2007 and show how agile that sound still is! And thats good! |
