Eastern Developments has always been a good address for quality releases. Take for example releases by Jan Jelinek, Daedelus, Ammon Contact and Prefuse 73 among many others. Reminder is the moniker of Joshua Mikah Abrams who has apparently been an important part of the Thrill Jockey Chicago scene for some time now, touring with bands and laying down bass for Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Prefuse 73, Sam Prekop, Tortoise and Town & Country. This certainly sets him in good musical stead, but it would be difficult to predict how this album would sound given all this influence. Abrams has here crafted an album of hugely enjoyable instrumental hiphop, taking a lo-fi sound you might expect to hear on a Bully release, adding a compositional charm that works a treat, working with diverse instruments and electronical machines.
Chicago's own Thaione Davis is featured on here too, delivering some well crafted raps over a very delightful guitar track... a great release - smoothed out all the way through but without losing it's grit. |
