Tony Allen has assembled a collective of Lagos' finest musicians, from a number of generations, for this album, which was recorded over a ten day session in the Nigerian capital. Key among the collaborators is veteran crooner Fatai Rolling Dollar, whose throaty vocals and agidigbo thumb piano graces four tracks. From Fela's classic Afrika 70 and Egypt 80 line-ups, saxmen Baba Ani and Show Boy add the quintessential afrobeat horn section undertow. Another standout guest talent is the Yoruba soul woman Yinka Davies, whose lashing vocals bring an almost Fela-like venom to track "Losun". Add to this some upcoming Lagos talent in the form of Omololu Ogunleye's modern, r&b flavours and Muritala Adisa 's spoken praise-singing and you complete the spectrum of quality performers, who make this one of the most exciting afrobeat records in recent times. |
