Interesting return from Rawkus Records' disciples Rise & Shine who had us in the mix back in the label's most prospering days. This duo released two 12-inches on the world renown indie, the nice "Confess Your Sins" as well as the "Move Your Body" single. Now back on track again, with a new three-shot 12" out independently through the Mao Mau imprint - we're presented to a solid lead track with "Gotcha Back". Not really your average DJ Premier beat, the heavy bassline is taking the entire song straight to the gutter. And it's NICE to experience Primo as he's taking it to the streets again. Dope beat for sure. Rise & Shine are taking their responsibility, dropping some twisted stuff verbally here. Nice! The other two selections here are produced by DJ Massey, and while "Meenie" (featuring Monet) sounds HORRIBLE - he's coming out better with the finishing "Brooklyn" jam, delivered on some strange space stuff... So, a Primo-laced lead track on a 12" can take you a long way - but still not very far anyway because of the additional two jams, not even matching up to fair competition. |
