Finally on vinyl, purple that is, with two bonus cuts not available on CD!
Expectations couldn't be higher on this one - announced at least 3 years ago, this took a while to become true (become a single silvery disc in your hand) and as much as we wished to this actually not happening, we were only afraid of being disappointed. Because who is going to life up to a straight classic album from beginning to end? And how many old heroes have we seen failing (ain't naming no one here)?
My first listen was biased, too much expectations running across my mind to be able to judge this accordingly and eased. But it took only a couple of listenings more and OB4CL2 would not leave my player anymore. RZA pulled together a stunning act of trying to sound like 15 years ago, a little less ruff on the edges but the samples are there (and who wants to front, sample clearance business has changed quite a bit!) and those beats thump heavily. Dilla should have collaborated with Rae years ago, because they go together like zinc and copper. Ghost is as entertaining as ever. GZA blows me away. And Rae is just amazing. These flows are irresistible, meandering smoked up crime stories which leave you both stunned and blazed.
It's not going to be another classic, what goes around comes around but times change, Hip Hop culture has changed drastically. The Wu had their part in history since they appeared on the map and these days are over, but Cuban Linx 2 is easily as good as any other dope album coming out this year, it might even be the best. |
