Cru Jonez is the solo project of Brooklyn-based drummer & producer Steve Bryant.
Side A - "May" - Opens with a sound collage combining glitchy synth wash, free-jazz vibraphone, and filtered horn stabs, all rolling out the carpet for the massive beat drop, reminiscent of early DJ Shadow. A distorted keyboard line hints at indie-rock undertones while the Synth-bass and vibes create their own phrase playing counterpoint to each other. In the middle of the track, the drums and keys are deconstructed before bringing back the original beat and building to a climax.
Side B – “Painted Basement” – A pulsing synth/dancehall bass starts this one off, only to be contrasted by a jazzy trip-hop drum pattern and a raindrop-like piano line. The chorus is a wash of live saxophone and trumpet pads, followed by a more rugged, punchy pass through the A section. The bridge is part Bonobo, part D'Angelo, laying down a groove both spacey and driving, and builds to the chaotic, "free jazz" ending.
